These characters are common to any busy early sawmill at the height of a day’s production. Beneath the large timber-framed mill, workers labor together to transform massive logs into finished lumber. Freshly cut logs are rolled toward the enormous circular saw while neatly stacked boards line the opposite side of the mill, illustrating the constant flow of work from raw timber to finished product.

The characters each represent a different role within the operation.

On the far left, a seasoned mill hand leans casually against a barrel during a brief pause, watching the activity around him. Nearby, another worker braces himself as he uses a long pike pole to guide a heavy log safely toward the saw. In the foreground, a laborer shovels away sawdust and wood debris to keep the work area clear and safe. At the center, a powerful worker uses a cant hook or timber lever to maneuver a freshly cut log into position. Behind him, an experienced foreman carefully supervises the lumber handling, directing the crew with an outstretched hand. In front of the lumber stacks, another worker signals to his fellow laborers, helping coordinate the movement of heavy timbers. On the far right, a determined mill worker reaches forward as if preparing to receive or steady a board, emphasizing the teamwork required to keep the sawmill operating efficiently.

Together, these figures capture the demanding, coordinated effort of a traditional working sawmill, where every laborer performs a specialized task to turn raw forest timber into usable lumber through strength, skill, and careful cooperation.
